WESTLAKE, Ohio
Spilled rebar snarls traffic: Interstate 90
The Westlake Police Department at 11 a.m. May 27 began receiving phone calls about several disabled vehicles lining the westbound lanes of I-90 between Cahoon and Crocker roads.
Officers discovered that approximately 25 vehicles had struck debris strewn across the highway. The truck that lost the load of rebar also stopped. Numerous cars had damage to tires, fenders and gas tanks. Two vehicles were towed from the scene.
An officer cited the 63-year-old truck driver from Parma for allowing load spillage on the highway.
I-90 was narrowed to one lane for more than 90 minutes while the debris was cleared and the vehicles were moved.
Intoxication: Crocker Park
A concerned citizen flagged down a Westlake police officer at 8:45 p.m. May 22 to report seeing an apparently intoxicated man trying to get into a car in one of the Crocker Park surface parking lots.
The officer found the described vehicle parked with the engine running. The man in the driver’s seat appeared to be in a minor physical struggle with a woman in the passenger’s seat. They stopped when the officer got their attention.
The man appeared to be intoxicated, but denied drinking. The officer noted that the man’s pants were unbuttoned and unbuckled. The officer told him to get fully dressed before stepping out of the car.
The 44-year-old Avon resident performed a field sobriety test. Afterward, the police officer arrested the man for having physical control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated. A breath test revealed the man’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit to be behind the wheel.
The passenger was released at the scene.
Fraud
A resident on May 17 came to the Westlake Police Department with a fraud complaint.
The woman had received an unexpected email that appeared to be an order confirmation from Amazon. Knowing that she had not ordered anything, the victim called the phone number on the email to report the mistake.
The man on the line said that “hackers” had control of her IP address, but he could clear up the issues. He demanded payment via eBay gift cards to help.
The victim bought gift cards worth hundreds of dollars and read the numbers to the scammer.
The Westlake Police Department, in a press release, reminded residents to be wary of unexpected emails, even if they look to be from a legitimate company. Do not trust the links or phone numbers listed on them.
Recipients should find a phone number from a source other than the suspicious email, and never pay debts with gift cards.
