COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In the first day of women's events from the NCAA West Preliminary Championship, the Oklahoma State Cowgirl track and field team represented well as five racers in the women's 800 meters and two athletes in the women's 400 meters qualified themselves for Saturday's quarterfinal action.
Opening the day from the field was Kelsey Kehl in the women's javelin throw. The 2021 Big 12 Outdoor Champion came up just short from a qualifying mark in the event in which she has become the Cowgirls' all-time performer. Kehl's best mark – a 48.95m toss – placed her right outside the top 12, in 15th overall.
Also in the first half of day two from E.B. Cushing Stadium, All-Big 12 pole vaulter Elissa Ray put a wrap on a historic Cowgirl track and field career. The second all-time Cowgirl performer in the indoor and outdoor pole vault posted a final clearance at the 3.92m bar, which placed her 26th in the supremely talented West Regional field.
As the running events got underway at, a pair of Cowgirls in Aaliyah Birmingham and Christina Ollison raced their way to qualifying finishes in the 400 meters. Birmingham – the Cowgirls' all-time performer in the outdoor 400 – tabbed a season best 51.81, while Ollison joined her in the top 24 finishers in a time of 53.40.
Following the Cowgirl sprints' specialists was a group of five middle distance specialists, each of whom either automatically qualified as top three finishers in their respective heat or in a qualifying pace as determined by the field.
Leading the group was Cowgirl distance veteran Kaytlyn Larson, who ran the fastest of her career – 2:04.93 – and finished second overall in the field of 48. Next up, freshman Sivan Auerbach, who finished runner-up in the 1,500 meters at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, clocked in at 2:06.45 for the 14th-place finish. Third among the Cowgirls, another freshman in Stephanie Moss paved her way to Saturday in 2:07.14. Rounding out the group, Rilee Rigdon (2:07.70) and Maddie Salek (2:08.73) earned automatic qualifications.
"Of all five of the women that we had make it through today, none of them were ranked in the top three of their heats," women's distance coach Anna Boyert-Thorp said. "For all of them to make it through, and most of them doing it as auto-qualifiers, it was awesome to see. To have [Kaytlyn Larson] come in and run a big-time PB to start us off, it set the tone for the younger girls that followed up after her. They're just so tight-knit and they've trained together for long enough to have developed a competitiveness among themselves."
As the NCAA West Prelim comes to its halfway point with two days down and two remaining, the Cowboys will be back on the track and in the field tomorrow as they get into a highly anticipated day of events, all of which have National qualifying implications.
Oklahoma State's first appearance of day three will be at 6:10 p.m. as Ryan Smeeton and Jonas Price compete in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase semifinal.
