Sergio Named to All-Big South First Team - Longwood Athletics

boonoor.blogspot.com
FARMVILLE, Va. – After a senior campaign in which he led Longwood in singles wins and winning percentage as a mainstay at the top of the Lancer lineup, Guilherme Sergio was named to the All-Big South first team in the league's annual awards release Wednesday. Junior Guillermo Cagigas also appeared on the 2021 awards list, earning Big South All-Academic Team honors for his work both on and off the court.

A 6-1 senior from Lisbon, Portugal, the All-Big South honor is the second of Sergio's career following his placement on the league's doubles first team alongside former teammate Amadeo Blasco in 2019. He becomes the eighth Lancer to earn All-Big South singles recognition and the fourth to appear on the first team, joining Blasco from 2017-19, Dan Elston in 2015 and Florian Uffer in 2017.

Sergio earned his most recent award after posting an 8-5 overall record and a 3-2 mark in Big South play in 2021, doing so while playing every singles bout in Longwood's top three slots. He went 5-2 at No. 1, 2-3 at No. 2 and 1-0 at No. 3, while winning both of his Big South bouts playing at No. 1.

Among his top wins on the year were a three-set victory over James Madison ace Holden Koons, a straight-set win over UNC Asheville's All-Big South singles rep Oli Nolan and a three-set win over Big South Player of the year Max Benson from Presbyterian. Sergio's win over Benson was one of only two conference losses for the Presbyterian ace.

On the season, Sergio went 3-2 against All-Big South singles players, including a straight-set road win at No. 2 against Gardner-Webb's second-team selection Chrisjan Van Wyk.

Sergio's 2021 season capped a three-year Lancer career in which he amassed a 49-19 singles record and an 11-4 record in Big South play to finish second in program history in singles winning percentage, fifth in singles wins, third in Big South wins and second in singles win percentage.

Meanwhile, Cagigas repeated as a Big South All-Academic Team honoree, receiving the award for a second straight year. The 5-11 native of Madrid, Spain, became the third Lancer to earn the honor multiple times, joining fellow two-timers Ed Becker in 2013-14 and Florian Uffer in 2016-17. A business administration major with a concentration in finance, Cagigas boasts a 3.495 grade point average and is a perennial Longwood University Dean's List selection. He has also contributed in both singles and doubles play, going 7-7 in singles and 7-7 in doubles this season.

The awards for Sergio and Cagigas come at the conclusion of head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez's third season leading the program. He recruited both of those players and will return six letterwinners for his fourth-year squad in 2021-22.
