DOWNER, Minn. — A mid-morning crash on Interstate 94 caused traffic to be re-routed for several hours to county roads and highways, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Eastbound Interstate 94 closed just south of Moorhead due to a semi-truck crash, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced at 9:50 a.m.
A semi-truck hauling metal poles was driving west on I-194 when the driver lost control and rolled into the center median. The truck's load of metal poles was dislodged due to the crash and landed in the eastbound lanes of I-94 where they struck a 2014 Chevy Captiva.
After the Chevy Captiva was struck, it rolled into the ditch with its driver Darrell James Olson, 73, and his passenger Susan Marcella Olson, 71 both of Princeton, Minnesota. Darrell and Susan were taken to Sanford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The semi-truck driver, identified as 28-year-old James Louis Dickenson of River Falls, Wisconsin, sustained no injuries according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Emergency response crews responded to the crash and helped to close a section of the interstate near Downer, an unincorporated community in rural Clay County about 10 miles southeast of Moorhead.
Officials detoured traffic to County Road 10 and Highway 9. The section of the interstate was cleaned up and re-opened at 12:45 p.m.
The following agencies were involved in the response Clay County Sheriff's Office, Sabin Fire Department, Barnesville Fire Department and ambulance, and Minnesota Department of Transportation.
