In yet another upset in a Triple Crown race, Swiss Skydiver (11-1) defeated race favorite Authentic (3-2), edging out the Bob Baffert trainee by a neck to win the 145th Preakness Stakes in a time of 1:53.10. This marks the first time that a filly has won the race since Rachel Alexandra did it in 2009.
Swiss Skydiver took the lead after the half-mile mark when jockey Robby Albarado made a gutsy cut towards the rail where there was space next to Authentic, who was leading the pack at the time. By the time John Velazquez, who was riding Authentic, realized what happened, it was too late for a proper response, resulting in the second place photo finish.

This was trainer Kenny McPeek's first win at the Preakness, and the second Triple Crown win of his career. His claim to fame prior to this victory was yet another upset win at the 2002 Belmont Stakes. There, his horse Sarava defeated and ended the Triple Crown bid of War Emblem, who had won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes that year.
"Just a real honor to be around a horse like this," said McPeek after the race. "It's a special moment."
Swiss Skydiver is now the sixth filly to win the Preakness, joining Flocarline (1903), Whimsical (1906), Rhine Maiden (1915), Nellie Morse (1924) and, of course, Rachel Alexandra. She also became just the 12th filly to win a Triple Crown race.
The Preakness Stakes brings an official end to one of the strangest Triple Crown years on record. With the coronavirus pandemic shutting down the sports world temporarily back in March, the races were forced to shuffle into different dates and a different order. The Belmont Stakes -- which is usually the final race of the Triple Crown -- kicked things off with Tiz the Law taking the victory in the first race. The Triple Crown bid was then spoiled at the Kentucky Derby, with Authentic getting the win at Churchill Downs. Justify remains the most recent horse to capture the Triple Crown, winning all three races in 2018.
