USDA program gets local produce in the hands of people in need during food box distribution at St. Anthony Catholic Church Monday.

Wyden, joined by other volunteers, helped to load food boxes to three lines of cars that snaked through the church's parking lot.

A Portland-based company, Pacific Coast Fruit, was awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to produce 1.8 million food boxes for needy individuals. On Tuesday, the company, which was founded in 1977, hit the 1 million mark in the number of USDA Farmers to Families food boxes shipped to those in need, according to officials.PMG PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Volunteers at St. Anthony Catholic Church help deliver boxes of Pacific Coast food boxes to needy families on Monday afternoon.

Though it's not alone among its neighbors, Tigard has been a hub of charitable activity during the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this month, local volunteers with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also teamed up with St. Anthony Catholic Church to make donations. The Times has also featured the work of the Good Neighbor Center and other Tigard-area organizations in serving people in need during the crisis.PMG PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - The Rev.
