USDA program gets local produce in the hands of people in need during food box distribution at St. Anthony Catholic Church Monday.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden was one of several volunteers who helped load 1,000 boxes of produce and dairy to needy individuals waiting at Tigard's St. Anthony Catholic Church Monday afternoon.
Wyden, joined by other volunteers, helped to load food boxes to three lines of cars that snaked through the church's parking lot.
The so-called combo boxes were filled with produce and dairy items that included deli ham and chicken, butter, milk, cheese, lettuce, potatoes and onions, produced by Pacific Coast Fruit.
A Portland-based company, Pacific Coast Fruit, was awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to produce 1.8 million food boxes for needy individuals. On Tuesday, the company, which was founded in 1977, hit the 1 million mark in the number of USDA Farmers to Families food boxes shipped to those in need, according to officials.
Though it's not alone among its neighbors, Tigard has been a hub of charitable activity during the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this month, local volunteers with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also teamed up with St. Anthony Catholic Church to make donations. The Times has also featured the work of the Good Neighbor Center and other Tigard-area organizations in serving people in need during the crisis.
