Good afternoon, Coug fans!
Your Washington State Cougars soccer put up a strong fight against the Seattle University Redhawks last night, but ultimately fell to their first loss this season, 1-2.
If you looked at the game breakdown, this score might make you scratch your head a little bit. The Cougs dominated and outshot Seattle U 25-6, with 5 shots from both powerhouse players Elyse Bennett and Sydney Studer, both of whom also took 2 shots on goal.
Additionally, Enzi Broussard was able to nab her first WSU career goal, which wound up being the only goal of the game for the Cougs. See it below! Go gas it up!
Some history behind this matchup — this was the Cougs’ first loss to Seattle since 2014, and unfortunately buried the 10-game unbeaten streak at home the Cougs have been developing since October 2019. Remember 2019? The before-times? Me too.
WSU and Seattle were tied for fouls at 12, and Cougs led in corner kicks (7-3) and unfortunately led in offsides as well (3-1, we’re just really eager). Both Seattle goals came from lucky free kick opportunities, the first of which came from Seattle U’s Hallie Bergford seizing an opportunity and forcing her way through. Under both goal circumstances, Coug defense missed an opportunity to communicate, and the score tells the story from there.
Ultimately, while this isn’t an ideal way to start a weekend of Washington State sports, it might have been a good reset for soccer to get focused and take on Sunday’s game against University of Kansas with a new fire under their feet.
Speaking of Kansas — they’re scheduled to host the Cougs this Sunday at 11 am Pacific time, 1 pm Central. Currently they sit at a 4-2-1 record with a .478 shot on goal percentage, compared to Washington State’s .464. This is going to be a nail biter, I can already tell. Let’s shake Thursday off and get geared up for a great weekend of WSU sports! Stay hydrated, Go Cougs!
