In what would be the 19th and final meeting between the Marlins and Braves this season, two teams headed in opposite directions, Sunday would see Miami handing the ball to Edward Cabrera.
The 23-year old, making just his fourth career Major League start, would get his first look at the first-place Atlanta Braves.
Unfortunately, Cabrera’s introduction to the Atlanta bats would be cut short as a toe injury would force the right-hander to an early exit after just 3.2 innings. In his injury-shortened outing, Cabrera allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 3, and striking out 4.
Per Marlins manager Don Mattingly, expectations are for Cabrera to make his next scheduled start.
With his early exit, the Marlins bullpen was forced to work the remaining 4.1 innings in an eventual 5-3 Atlanta victory. With the win, the Braves end the season-series 11-8 against Miami.
Atlanta starter Max Fried would complete his 9th consecutive quality start, allowing 3 earned runs over 6 innings pitched, en route to his 12th victory of the season.
Following Sunday’s victory over the Fish, Fried now sports a 2.02 ERA over those 9 starts, a stretch spanning 58 innings back to July 28th.
Right fielder Jesús Sánchez continued his torrid pace against Atlanta pitching, opening the scoring with a solo home run in the 2nd, his third in as many games. Sánchez’s home run, his 10th and one which landed 460 feet from home plate, came in just his 184th plate appearance of the season.
Sánchez would later touch Fried up for a game-tying single in the 6th, a run-scoring hit set up by bobbled fielding attempt by the Gold Glove-winning Fried.
Doing as they’ve done in the wake of losing their right fielder, Ronald Acuña Jr., the Braves continued resiliency won over in the 7th inning as the club would hit go-ahead home runs courtesy of Ozzie Albies (28) and Freddie Freeman (30), both coming off Miami reliever Anthony Bass. In 55.1 innings, Bass has now allowed 11 home runs.
Facing closer Will Smith trailing by two in the 9th, Sánchez would again inflict damage on Atlanta’s arms, opening the inning with a leadoff triple, the Marlins’ second of the day following a Lewin Díaz triple in the team’s two-run 6th.
Smith would ultimately recover to strand Sánchez, whom the longtime reliever recently criticized for admiring a home run he hit off him on August 18th, to lock down his 32nd save of the season.
Monday will be a travel day for the Marlins as they head to Washington to begin a series of pending cellar-dwellers in the NL East when they open up Tuesday against the Nationals.
