CHOUDRANT, La. -- The High Point University men's golf team began its 2021-22 season on Sunday (Sept. 12) at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, hosted by Louisiana Tech. The team ended the day in a tie for 15th place at eight-over with a 296.

Only one Panther golfer was under par in the first round of the season in freshman Charlie Barr with a one-under 71 for a share of 17th place. Graduate transfer Stuart Fuller finished at two-over and redshirt sophomore Christian Castillo was one stroke behind with a three-over 75. Fuller's fellow graduate transfer Avery Price was one shot behind Castillo with a 76 while redshirt junior Drew Weary rounded out the Purple and White's lineup with a first-round 78.

"We're good, and this team is good," head coach Brady Gregor said after his team's first round of the season. "As a whole, we had some first-tournament-of-the-year jitters that we absolutely have to shake off and go play our game tomorrow. We were close to the lead most of the day and just didn't finish like we needed to. It's a packed leaderboard and we can still get to where we need to be by the end of 54 holes."

Barr and Price each had four birdies on the day to lead the team but Barr limited his bogeys to just three. The freshman made his mark on par-4s, finishing tied for the best score on the par-4s on the day at three-under. He started his day on the back with two birdies on par-4s, holes 13 and 15, but bogeyed the par-3s 13 and 16 and the par-5 17th. It was only red numbers for Barr on the front as he birdied hole four and ended his day with a red four on the par-5 ninth for his only birdie on a non-par-5 on the day.

"I couldn't be more proud of our freshman, Charlie, stepping up in a big way and going under par for us in his first collegiate round," Gregor said of Barr's debut.

Fuller started his day with a bogey on the 10th but immediately bounced back with a birdie on 11. He took another one on 14 before dropping back to even at the turn with a bogey on 18. The Wofford transfer took back-to-back bogeys on three and four and another one on eight before ending his day on a positive note with a bird on nine.

Castillo also ended his day with a birdie on nine, carding both of his birdies in his final nine holes on the front. Just like Fuller he also started his day with a bogey on 10 and then took consecutive bogeys on 16 and 17. His first birdie of the day came on the par-5 second. Two more bogeys awaited the Texas native before his final birdie of the day on his last hole.

Price split his four birdies with two on each nine. His first birdie came on hole 11 and was sandwiched between bogeys on 10 and 12. He birdied 14 to get back to even but it didn't last for long as he bogeyed his next hole. A strong start to the front nine with birds on holes one and two got him into red numbers on the day but a five-over stretch over six holes dropping him back to four-over for the round.

Weary also bogeyed the 10th hole to start the day (it was only Barr that didn't) but he made the turn at one-under after bouncing back with birdies on both of the par-5s on the back - holes 11 and 17. The front was not as kind to Weary as he picked up one more birdie on hole five but struggled into the finish with a score of +7 over his final four holes.

The Panthers will look to climb up the leaderboard on moving day on Monday (Sept. 13). HPU will go off of hole one in the nine o'clock hour and the Purple and White are paired with Louisiana and ULM, along with individuals from Lamar, Southern Mississippi, Central Arkansas, and ULM.
