Football To Play First Game In Oregon This Season Traveling To Face Portland State This Saturday On ESPN+
HILLSBORO, Ore. – Following lengthy road trips to Colorado and Texas, the Western Oregon University football team will have to only travel up the road this week when they face Division I Portland State in Hillsboro this Saturday with a 2:05 p.m. kickoff. The game will also be streamed on ESPN+.
The Wolves (0-2) are coming off of another close game against Texas A&M-Kingsville with the Javelinas taking the 24-10 victory. With the game tied at three early in the second quarter, Texas A&M-Kingsville scored 21 straight points to pull away.
Ryan Worthley completed 30-45 for 241 yards. Omari Land rushed for 73 yards on 21 carries and added a touchdown, while Thomas Wright had 61 receiving yards on three catches. Jaylin Parnell led the defense with nine tackles (six solo), along with 2.5 tackles for a loss of three yards and a pair of quarterback hurries. Kenny Brown added seven tackles and a half-tackle for loss.
In comparison this season, WOU has tallied 572 yards and the defense has only allowed 629 yards through the first two games.
Worthley has completed 50-77 for 463 yards, with a long pass of 42 yards. Land has rushed 30 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, with a long run of 25 yards. Wright leads the receivers with seven catches for 122 yards, with a long reception of 42 yards. Justice Murphy has five catches for 76 yards, with a long of 37 yards. Marquis Sampson has 11 catches for 69 yards, with a long of 20 yards. Andrew Valladares has seven catches for 67 yards and Jarren Ford has 10 receptions for 61 yards.
On defense, Ryan Minniti has 14 tackles, with nine solo to lead the team. Brown and Parnell are tied for second on the team with 13 tackles apiece. Brown has three solo, 1.5 tackles for loss, while Parnell has nine solo tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Joey Sinclair gives the Wolves four with double-digits in tackles checking in at 10, with four coming solo and also has a fumble recovery. So far this year, the defense has 10 tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception.
This will be the fourth time that WOU has played Portland State since 2008, with the Vikings going 3-0. The last meeting took place in 2015 with Portland State taking the 31-0 victory. The meeting in 2014 went right down to the end with the Vikings holding on for the 45-38 win. All three previous meetings also were played on the road.
Portland State has played a pair of road games to start the season falling to Hawaii (49-35) and Washington State (44-24). During the 2019 season, the Vikings went 5-7, which included a 70-7 win over GNAC school Simon Fraser.
The Vikings are averaging 448.5 yards per game while allowing 517.5 per contest. Of their 897 total yards, 718 have come through the air.
Davis Alexander has completed 50-96 for 693 yards and five touchdowns. On the ground, Malik Walker has rushed for 94 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown, with QB Alexander adding 17 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. Beau Kelly leads the receivers going for 284 yards on 16 catches and a pair of scores. Darien Chase adds 12 catches for 164 yards and Nate Bennett is at 11 catches for 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
On defense, Parker McKenna leads the way with 17 tackles, 10 solo and a tackle for loss. Justice Pagan has 14 tackles, three for loss and a sack. VJ Malo adds five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Anthony Adams has both interceptions. Total on defense, Portland State has 15 tackles for loss and six sacks through the first two games.
WOU ranks high nationally in several categories including: 35th in completion percentage (63.6), 79th in first downs allowed on defense (33), 73rd in fumbles recovered (1), 37th in kickoff return yards per game (24.57), 59th in net punting (35.90), 54th in passing yards per game (252), 25th in passing yards allowed per game (127.5), 74th in time of possession (30:11) and 63rd in total defensive yards allowed per game (314.5).
Individually, Anderson ranks 33rd nationally in combined kick return yards (126) and is 36th in kickoff return yards per game (25.2). Worthley is 25th in completion percentage (64.9), 12th in completions per game (25), 44th in passing yards (463) and 51st in passing yards per game (231.5). Daniel Cossette is 38th in field goal percentage (66.7) and 24th in field goals per game (1). Joey Sinclair is tied for ninth in fumbles recovered (1). Billy Nelson is 38th in interceptions per game (.50). Machiah Leee is 44th in passes defended per game (1.5). Sampson is 34th in punt return yards per game (5.5) and is 54th in receptions per game (5.5). Andrew Gross is 53rd in punting average per game (37.1). Ford is 68th in receptions per game (5). Parnell ranks 20th in tackles for loss per game (2.2).
A look around the GNAC this past week had Simon Fraser traveling to McMinnville where Linfield took the 56-20 victory. Central Washington played up against Eastern Washington in Cheney where the Eagles claimed the 63-14 victory. The first GNAC contest arrives this week when Central Washington travels to Canada to face Simon Fraser. It will be back-to-back weeks for Simon Fraser hosting a GNAC opponent with WOU coming in the following week.
