Comeback kids: Shepherd notches first win - The Morning Sun

Wait for it, wait for it.

On Thursday night from Veteran’s Memorial Stadium the Shepherd Blue Jays notched their first win of the season via a huge fourth-quarter comeback.

Trailing 7-6 entering the fourth quarter the Jays reeled off 20-unanswered points to top visiting Beaverton 26-7 in Jack Pine Conference action.

The Jays (1-1, 1-0 JPC) got a big night from Isaiah Reihl as he rushed it 25 times for 110-yards and two scores. He had rushing TDs from six and 14-yards out.

Quarterback Jude Moeggenborg completed 15-of-20 passes for 205 yards. He hit Tate Ross with a 17-yard TD pass.

Ross had four catches for 60 yards while Justin Flannery caught eight passes for 95 yards. Ross also returned a fumble 58 yards for a score and finished with seven tackles.

Maddox Woods led the D with eight tackles while Logan Klump had seven.

Harrison 52, Farwell 0

Harrison improved to 2-0 on the season Thursday at home from Dick Harris Field.

The Hornets scored early and kept at it as they routed Farwell 52-0 in Jack Pine Conference action.

For the night the hosts tallied 352 yards on the ground, led by Caleb Hoskey who had 145-yards rushing on seven carries. He scored twice.

Connor Kirby added in three rushing scores and had 79 yards on six carries while quarterback Haydin Sims ran it three times for 25 yards and one score. Chris Beniott added in a rushing score also.

Harrison (2-0, 1-0 JPC) outgained Farwell (0-2, 0-1) on the night 357-111.

Bryan Albert led the defense with nine tackles and an interception while Logan Ashcroft had seven tackles and a pick. Kirby also had seven tackles for Harrison.

Holton 28, Coleman 14

HOLTON – Coleman had its record evened at 1-1 Thursday via a non-conference road defeat at Holton, 28-14.

The hosts took a 20-8 lead into the half and held the Comets off from there.

Ty Murray had an 81-yard kick-off return for score in the first half for the Comets. In the fourth quarter Ty Klopf hit Conner Schrank with an 11-yard touchdown pass to close the scoring out.

Schrank ran for 46 yards on 12 carries and had one catch for 11 yards. He also had nine tackles and an interception.

Klopf completed 13-of-26 passes for 141 yards. Ayden Ruhle had six catches for 51 yards and led the defense with 12 tackles.

Coleman will win its Sept. 10 game versus Montabella via forfeit as the Mustangs are playing 8-man football this fall.

Freeland 40, Alma 7

Three first-quarters turnovers turned Thursday’s game from Don Miller Field.

As it was the host Panthers turned it over three times in the opening 12 minutes of play Thursday which opened the door for visiting Freeland en route to a 40-7 rout.

Alma falls to 1-1 overall and to 0-1 in TVC Central play via the defeat while the Falcons improve to 2-0 overall and to 1-0 in conference action.

Freeland’s Ty Fourner opened the scoring at the 10:38 mark of the first quarter via a 40-yard interception return for score.

The Panthers moved the ball effectively on their second offensive drive before a chop-block call killed the drive.

Freeland upped the lead to 14-0 with 6:08 left in the first via a Garrett Pistro 14-yard TD run. After an Alma fumble Freeland quarterback Bryson Huckeby hit Jacob Kundinger with a 28-yard TD pass to make it 20-0.

In the second the Falcons added two more scores as Huckeby hit Alex Duley with a 42-yard TD pass and Kundinger blasted in from a yard out. Freeland led 33-0 at the half.

Alma got on the board in the third when JB Couch intercepted a Huckeby pass and returned it five yards for a TD score. Holden Davis applied the pressure on the play.

The Falcons closed the scoring out in the fourth when Huckeby hit Daniel Duley with a 10-yard TD pass.

Sam Rosales completed 10-of-21 passes for 76 yards for the Panthers while Carlos Martinez-Medina and Brenden Everdeen both had 22 yards rushing to lead the way.

Delvon Pasco-Ward led the wide-receiving corps with four catches for 39 yards while Cade Sutherland had two catches for 14 yards.

Harrison Seeley, Landon Bethka and Couch all had interceptions for the hosts.

Alma returns to action at Bay City John Glenn on Sept. 10.

Breckenridge 40, MLS 20

Breckenridge High School picked up its first victory of the 2021 campaign at home Thursday via a 40-20 non-conference win over visiting Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary.

The Huskies trailed 8-0 early before scoring 24-unanswered points to claim the lead for good.

Breckenridge (1-1) got its first score via a 32-yard pass from quarterback Luke Saunders to Jacob Gillis.

This tandem hooked up on an 8-yard TD pass later in the game.

Cramer Laurenz chipped in a 63-yard fumble recovery for score while Saunders had three rushing scores. He had two 1-yard TDs and one 2-yard TD.

He finished 12-of-15 passing for 188 yards while rushing it nine times for 47 yards. Laurenz added in 42 yards on 11 carries.

Gillias had three catches for 40 yards while Laurenz led the D with seven tackles.

Breckenridge returns to action at Clarkston Everest Collegiate on Sept. 10. The game will be played at Clarkston High.

Standish-Sterling 27, Ithaca 20

STANDISH – The Ithaca football team fell to 0-2 on the season Thursday via a 27-20 road loss at Standish-Sterling.

The Jackets led 12-7 at the end of one quarter before the hosts took a 27-12 lead into the half

Ithaca scored the lone score in the second half.

Quarterback Bronson Bupp hit Dalton Seaman with a 31-yard TD pass in the first quarter before connecting with Ethan Hull on a 32-yard score later in the frame.

Bupp closed the scoring out with a seven-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Bupp ran it 23 times for 166 yards and completed 9-of-22 passes for two scores. He was intercepted twice.

Hull had four catches for 86 yards while Seaman caught two passes for 33 yards.

Noah Risner also ran it seven times for 66 yards.

Akron-Fairgove 36, Ashley 14

The Ashley football team had its record evened at 1-1 Thursday via a 36-14 loss to Akron-Fairgrove.

Both Bear touchdowns were scored by quarterback Logan Drummond on the ground. He finished with 101-yards rushing on 15 carries and had 21 tackles on D. He also completed two passes for 55 yards.

Dillan Beebe had 17 tackles while Bailey Long had 18. Gavin Malek had eight tackles and a fumble recovery also.
