Keith Appling, former Michigan State University basketball player, has been charged with first-degree murder from a fatal Detroit shooting in May.
On May 22, Appling was accused of shooting and killing 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds after a verbal altercation turned physical.
The Detroit Police Department said Appling "fired multiple gunshots at the victim fatally wounding him." According to officials, Appling and Edmonds are related by marriage and the argument between the two may have been related to a stolen gun.
Appling was arrested May 24 following a two-day search.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced June 4 that her office has charged Appling with one count of first-degree murder, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm, according to USA Today.
In addition, Appling's girlfriend Natalie Banister, has been charged with one count of accessory after the fact and one count of lying to a peace officer. Allegedly. Banister drove Appling away from the scene and didn't tell officers investigating the case.
Appling’s arraignment date has not yet been released.
In February 2020, Appling was arrested in Warren, Michigan for having 19 grams of heroin in his car. Prior, he spent a year in jail after facing multiple charges after discarding a gun while fleeing from officers.
