Frank Vogel faced a dilemma in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 108-94 win in Memphis. He wanted to sub out LeBron James to avoid playing his megastar for all 12 minutes of the final period.
But there’s this thing James has a habit of doing.
“He keeps making big plays, and it’s tough to get him out,” the Lakers head coach lamented.
The questions of workload and usage have followed James into each of these latter years of his career. They have just as consistently proven meritless. James has built himself into the anti-load management superstar. Even still, this season the concerns felt more legitimate for a combination of factors.
James turned 36 last week. He had just a 71-day break between the end of the NBA Finals and the start of his 18th season. He just signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Lakers through 2023.
Knowing all that, shouldn’t he just coast through the opening weeks, if not...
