FINAL RESULTS

CEDAR CITY, Utah –

The 20th-ranked Boise State gymnastics team was looking for a third-consecutive upset to begin the 2021 season, having already defeated No. 13 Oregon State and No 14 BYU, but the Broncos fell short Friday evening in a Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference showdown against No. 17 Southern Utah, dropping its first meet of the year, 196.425-194.825.

"All four teams in this conference are top-25 caliber programs, and we have a lot of work to do if we're going to hold our own," head coach Tina Bird said. "I saw some great things tonight, but there are definitely some things we have to fix if we're going to be raising another trophy."

The Broncos (2-1, 1-1 MRGC) and Thunderbirds (3-3, 2-2 MRGC) were virtually knotted headed into the final rotation at the America First Event Center, with SUU leading by .025, but an uncharacteristic evening on beam ultimately decided the meet. Boise State had entered the evening ranked 16th nationally in the event, but had two falls.

A season-high 49.150 from Boise State's floor line-up had put the Broncos in position for a chance to pull off the upset. Boise State received career-high-tying routines from sophomore Adriana Popp (9.900) and junior Hope Masiado (9.825), a season-high 9.850 from junior Samantha Smith and a 9.825 from freshman Courtney Blackson in her first-collegiate appearance in the event.

Senior Emily Muhlenhaupt grabbed a share of her second-career beam title, recording a 9.850.

Redshirt senior Maddi Nilson (9.850) led the Broncos on bars, and Smith and senior Gabriela Cavinta tied for the team high on vault (9.800). Popp's 9.900 led Boise State on floor.

The Broncos will return home next week, hosting 21st-ranked Utah State in another MRGC showdown at ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos and Aggies are slated to begin their dual meet at 6 p.m., and the meet will be streamed live at BroncoSports.com.
