Leadership Harrison County’s class of 2020 has announced its ribbon-cutting ceremony for a Baby Box placed at Harrison Township Fire Dept.

The ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the fire department located at 120 Hilltop Drive in Corydon.

A Baby Box is a location where parents can anonymously give up a newborn baby. When a baby is placed in the box, emergency personnel are immediately notified with an alarm and will go get the child. As soon as the person shuts the box door, it is locked so only emergency personnel can open it. The baby will then go through the foster child process.

Indiana’s Safe Haven Infant Protection Act, which was put in place in 2008, allows a distressed parent to give up an unwanted infant safely, legally and confidentially. It preserves the parent from arrest or prosecution for abandonment and requires no names or records. It permits babies less than 30 days old to be given up at any emergency medical services provider in the state. It also makes medical treatment and social services available to the birth mother and puts the child into the custody of the Indiana Division of Family & Social Services Administration, which then places the infant in a foster or pre-adoptive home.

Leadership Harrison County encourages community members to attend the ceremony, suggesting attendees wear masks and maintain a safe distance from each other during the outdoor event.
