The Cleveland Browns expect a bigger contribution from safety Ronnie Harrison in their playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday after a COVID-19 misadventure for their first-round game.
As Cleveland prepared to play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Super Wild-Card Weekend on Jan. 10, Harrison tested positive for the coronavirus and went on reserve/COVID-19. Subsequent tests showed that result had been wrong, and the Browns restored Harrison to the active roster on the day before the game.
Although Harrison had played every Cleveland defensive snap in the Browns’ 24-22 victory over the Steelers in the regular-season finale on Jan. 3, the former Alabama standout was on the field for only 11 snaps in the 48-37 playoff victory over Pittsburgh.
“I do expect more from Ronnie,” Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski said on Thursday, “and he’s ready to go. He was kind of in and out of the lineup, so to speak, during the week last week where he was ruled out and was able to come back. With a normal week of practice, I do expect him out there.”
Stefanski said Harrison’s unsettled situation had kept him from properly preparing to play in the first-round game.
“Somebody’s in and then they’re out and then he’s back,” Stefanski said, “so I’m pleased that he’s here the whole time.”
Even though Harrison played only 11 snaps against the Steelers, he still recorded four tackles in his second game back from an injury that sidelined him for four contests in December.
Harrison joined Cleveland in a trade with Jacksonville on Sept. 3, when the Browns sent a fifth-round choice in the 2021 NFL Draft to the Jaguars. As Harrison has prepared for the playoffs this week, Jacksonville hired Urban Meyer as its coach after the Jaguars posted a 1-15 record in 2020
A third-round choice in the 2018 NFL Draft and a full-time starter for Jacksonville in 2019, Harrison reached Cleveland’s starting lineup in the fifth game of 2020. In 11 games and 325 defensive snaps for Cleveland during the regular season, Harrison had 38 tackles, one interception (which he returned for a touchdown), seven passes defended, one sack and one fumble recovery.
The Browns and Chiefs are scheduled to kick off at 2:05 p.m. CST Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. CBS will televise the game.
The winner will advance to the AFC Championship Game, where it will play the Buffalo Bills at 6:40 p.m. CST Jan. 24 for a spot in Super Bowl LV. The Bills defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-3 on Saturday night.
