Online mega-retailer Amazon announced plans Wednesday to open a new warehouse in Temple Terrace and a delivery station in Lutz in 2021.

The more than 600,000-square-foot “fulfillment center” will result in 750 new jobs. In Florida, there are currently Amazon fulfillment and sorting centers in Lakeland, Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville, Davenport and Ruskin.

“The City of Temple Terrace is very excited to welcome Amazon as our newest corporate citizen,” Temple Terrace acting Mayor Andrew Ross said in a news release. “Amazon’s presence in our amazing city will bring more jobs and opportunities for residents and those throughout the region.”

Amazon is looking to hire employees to pack and ship small household goods, books, electronics and toys. The center will also have jobs in human resources, safety, finance, operations management, information technology and security.

The company emphasized its benefits package for workers and minimum starting wage of $15 an hour. It has come under fire from workers and labor rights’ activists, who said the company did not address safety concerns particularly during the pandemic.

“Amazon is committed to providing great jobs with industry leading pay and benefits, starting on day one, in a safe, innovative work environment,” Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment Alicia Boler Davis said in the news release announcing the Temple Terrace warehouse. “Amazon is grateful for the continued support we’ve received from local and state leaders and we look forward to creating over seven hundred jobs for the Temple Terrace community.”

In the news release, Wednesday, Temple Terrace city manager Charles Stephenson said he also looks forward to the center’s opening.

“The City has strived in the past to expand its commercial base on the eastern border and the addition of Amazon is a vital piece to these expansion efforts,” he said. “The site selected is ideal for access to major transportation corridors and will provide added economic growth and employment to this area of Temple Terrace.”

With over 150 delivery stations across the country, Amazon hopes to speed up its service in Pasco County with the Lutz delivery station, the final stop for packages before they reach customers.
