DURHAM, N.C.— The Duke women's soccer team held its first intrasquad scrimmage Saturday evening at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils split into two squads to get a taste of live game action ahead of the 2020 season.
The three period scrimmage proved to be valuable for head coach Robbie Church and his team.
"It's been a beautiful afternoon on this perfectly manicured field," said Church. "A lot of people don't have the ability to do this right now. There's been a lot of times we didn't even think we'd get this far in the season."
Both squads used the first period to feel each other out as a total of three shots were attempted in the first 30 minutes.
"It's hard when you have your own two teams and you're playing the same shape," said Church. "These intrasquad things are tough."
All of the scoring came in the second period as both teams managed to get on the board.
Duke junior Marykate McGuire opened the scoring off for the blue squad in the 28th minute of the second period, off a turnover for the white squad. Sophomore Sophie Jones, who is coming off suffering a season-ending injury last season as a freshman, responded for the white team with a goal, assisted by rookie Nicole Chico, eight minutes later to even the score, 1-1.
All three goalkeepers saw action in the scrimmage – redshirt senior Brooke Heinsohn, sophomore Ruthie Jones and junior Holly Stam. Each netted a save in the match.
Overall, the scrimmage produced optimism for the Blue Devils.
"We still have a lot to do before we're ready to play for real, but I think we're really deep out here and we have a lot of talent on the team," said junior defender Delaney Graham. "I think we're going to be amazing this year."
