Rowing Announces First Half of Incoming Class - Michigan State University Athletics - Michigan State Athletics

boonoor.blogspot.com

East Lansing, Mich. -- Head coach Kim Chavers has announced the first half of her recruiting class, featuring 19 incoming student-athletes for the Michigan State rowing program this fall.  The remainder of the class will be announced later this week.

"Rowing is a sport which continues to grow at the high school level, and affords us the opportunity to work with athletes from around the world, who each bring their own styles and experiences," said Chavers, who has assembled her first recruiting class as just the third Michigan State mentor in program history.

The group of experienced rowers consists of student-athletes from Washington, California, Virginia, Ohio (three), and Michigan (eight), in addition to rowers from Greece, Canada, Australia, and Austria.  "All will be bringing with them a unique sense of what rowing is and how to perform within the sport," continued Chavers.  "This gives us the fun challenge of teaching what it means to row or cox for Michigan State.

On the rowing side, Chavers and her staff are excited that some of the Fall 2020 incoming class have spent a lot of time racing and practicing in sculling boats (where rowers have two oars each and which feature, as a result, slightly different blade handling technique). Likewise, many of the incoming rowers have rowed sweep before, during which they have rowed on port or starboard side (and more often than not have practiced or raced both) with one oar. Though all seven racing events at the Big Ten Championship are sweep rowing, the staff is nevertheless excited about the range of experiences and technique that these incoming rowers bring to the team. Given their previous experience, these new Spartan rowers will have the opportunity to not only push each other to progress, but also their new teammates.

The coxswain experiences also range in their experiences as well. One started their team as a high schooler, while others spent a majority of their rowing career blade- in-hand and will be transitioning into the coxswain role. As a major voice in the boats and on the team, coxswains play an critical role and have a major contribution to a boat's success

Whether it be technique, boating experience, racing strategy, or even the various cultures of rowing from around the world, Chavers and her staff are excited to welcome the Fall 2020 class of rowers and coxswains.
