The A’s postponed their first position player workouts of training camp Sunday due to not having received results of coronavirus testing for those players.
Position players went through intake testing Friday, but the results were not returned Saturday due to the Fourth of July holiday. As a result, position players were not cleared to take the field for workouts Sunday afternoon as scheduled, the team said.
There was a possibility of the A’s having an evening position player workout if test results came back in time - but manager Bob Melvin indicated that was unlikely. Melvin said he was hopeful position players would be able to work out Monday.
“It feels like we’re five days behind with our position players right now,” Melvin said. “That’s not really the case, but it feels like it.”
Some MLB teams have already held live batting practice sessions allowing hitters who have not seen live pitching for several months to begin regaining their timing.
A’s pitchers threw bullpen sessions Saturday and Sunday, and Melvin said pitchers would be off Monday - so the A’s first day of live batting practice will likely be Tuesday.
Melvin was scheduled to address his full team about following MLB health and safety protocols during Sunday’s staggered workouts and position players were going to get their first glimpse of the new clubhouse set-up and changes to weight room and batting cage use.
Such adjustments and position players’ individual work will instead likely start Monday followed by a longer workout Tuesday with live batting practice, cage hitting and other drills, Melvin said.
“Just getting them on the field, getting some defensive work in, getting some batting practice … learning a new routine as far as doing soft toss or team work, wherever that may actually happen in the ballpark, at least they’ll have a feeling once they get off the field tomorrow kind of where they need to go and what they need to do,” Melvin said.
