Henry Davis was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday night, making him the ninth Louisville player selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. He joins Brendan McKay and Corey Ray as the only Cardinals to hear their name called in the top five picks of the draft.
Davis, regarded as one of the best hitters in the draft, put together an impressive at Louisville, earning a spot on the Right Field All-American wall at Jim Patterson Stadium. And a lot of money. The first overall pick slot value is $8,415,300. WOW.
This season, he was named an All-American by all six publications and was finalist for the Buster Posey Award, given to the best catcher in college baseball. Davis was also named a semi-finalist for the Golden Spikes award, given to the best overall player in the country.
Unfortunately for the New York native, his career at Louisville did not end the way he had hoped. Last season was cut short due to COVID and Louisville did not make the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time in a decade. Not much blame can be put on Davis, he did everything in his power to earn the Cards a spot in the postseason.
He put up ridiculous numbers, batting .370 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 9 doubles and stole 10 bases. His career numbers are just as eye opening, considering his other seasons were his freshman campaign and a shortened 202 that saw a mere 17 games.
For his career, Davis batted .337 with 21 home runs, 84 RBI, added 19 doubles and had a .435 OBP. With numbers like that, he is going to be a tough one to replace behind the plate.
