The Buffalo Sabres went into tonight with the best odds to win the first overall pick and will end up selecting first overall in the 2021 NHL Draft! The Seattle Kraken moved up from third overall and will select second. The Anaheim Ducks round out the top three at third overall.
The interesting part is that there is not a prospect that is the consensus top pick in the draft this year. There are about three or four players that could first overall. The group includes two defensemen in Owen Power and Luke Hughes. The other two candidates are forwards Matt Beniers and William Eklund.
As of now, University of Michigan teammates Power and Beniers are the most likely two that would be selected first overall.
We now get to focus on the draft conversation we’ll be having this summer as we debate which player the Sabres should select. Do they go forward? Should they go defense?
This may turn into a Power vs Beniers debate for a month and a half.
Pick a side.
