Lego’s new old-school typewriter has a moving carriage, can load paper - PennLive

Kids today may not have ever seen the green-colored clattering typewriter that at one time adorned offices everywhere.

Now they can build one, although this is for adult fans of the toy construction bricks.

Lego recently unveiled its classic typewriter - a design created by a fan.

“The original concept for the typewriter came through LEGO fan Steve Guinness’ submission to the LEGO Ideas platform, a LEGO initiative that takes new ideas that have been imagined and voted for by fans and turns them into reality,” Lego said.

Discussing his idea, Guinness said, “I wanted to create something totally different from anything that LEGO has ever done before and showcase that you really can make anything out of LEGO.

I bought a vintage typewriter for my research and then played around with bricks and the mechanism until I was happy with the design. I hope it will bring nostalgia to adult fans like me, and wonder and curiosity to younger fans who might not have ever seen a real typewriter.”

The Lego typewriter has 2,079 pieces. Lego said it is “designed to mirror the function and tactility of a classic typewriter” and features a center typebar that rises every time a letter key is pressed. The carriage moves across as you type and real paper can be fed into the platen roller.

In a nod to “the lost art of letter writing,” each set comes with a signed letter from Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, chairman of the Lego Group.

Federico Begher, VP of global marketing at the Lego Group said, “It’s not hard to see why the vintage typewriter has such enduring appeal, and Steve’s incredible replica is a thoroughly worthy LEGO Ideas success story.

“For many, the escape from the connected world to the simplicity of the typewriter is a similar experience to the mindful process of building with LEGO bricks. Here, we have a LEGO set that combines these two worlds seamlessly and like its real-life counterparts, is something LEGO fans will be proud to display in their homes.”

The typewriter is available to Lego VIP members on June 16 and to the general public on July 1 for $199.99.

Last month Lego released the colorful “Everyone is Awesome” set “to celebrate the diversity of our fans and the world around us.”

“The buildable display model is inspired by the iconic rainbow flag which is used as a symbol of love and acceptance by the LGBTQIA+ community, and features 11 monochrome minifigures each with its own individual hairstyle and rainbow [color].”
