Weaver Tied for First After Round One of Big South Championship

Men's Golf /

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Brandon Weaver ended the first round of the Big South Men's Golf Championship with a share of first place, as the Lancers currently rank fourth at the Patriot at Grand Harbor.

As a team, the Lancers fired a one-over 285, their lowest team score in a single round in 2021, to finish in a tie for fourth place after 18 holes—the top four teams after three rounds of stroke play will advance to match play to determine the team winner.

"We did what we needed to do today," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman.  "It was just the first round, so nobody was going to win the tournament.  What you want to do is hang in there to fight again tomorrow, and, in the very least, we accomplished that.

Nobody contributed more to Longwood's strong day than Weaver, who was consistent all afternoon to finish at 68 (-3) with five birdies while conceding just two bogeys. Sunday's round marked his best round of the season, and lowest since score since firing a 67 in the second round of the Old Dominion / OBX Collegiate on Oct. 22, 2019. His five birdies were tied for the third-most in the field, while he also ranked in the top-15 in scoring on all of par three, four, and five holes.

His strong day culminated in a T-1st finish, as Ryan Tattan from Winthrop and Parker Jones from Charleston Southern each matched Weaver at -3 at Grand Harbor. Weaver, who returned for his fifth season in Farmville after graduating in the May of 2020, is looking for his second career win after winning the 2018 Manor Intercollegiate.

Three other Lancers joined Weaver in the top-25, led by Miles Parroco's T-14th with an even par 71. Parroco dropped in three birdies, and ranked second in the field with 13 pars.

Brendan Dunphy and Nick Rakes each posted scores of 73 (+2), tying for 25th with 36 holes to play. Rakes ranked second in the field with six birdies, playing the four par-five holes with average scores of 4.00 (-3), the second most in the tournament. Dunphy tallied three birdies and 10 pars, finishing strong with a back nine score of 33 (-2).

Christian Michael, making his return to the Longwood lineup, finished at 76 (+5) to rank T-41st. He recorded a birdie with no score worse than bogey, and ripped off nine consecutive birdies from holes 9-to-17.

As a team, Longwood tallied 51 pars and 18 birdies. The Lancers averaged scores of 4.53 (-7) on par fives, their lowest mark in a round this season. They sit just five strokes back of the leaders, Charleston Southern and Campbell, who both ended at 280 (-4).

"There were several times when we had guys bounce back from a tough situation by doing something that really helped us," added Fillman.  "For the most part, we were able to put misfortune behind us and focus on our task at hand, which was good to see.

"We'll need to continue to let those bad things go throughout the week.  Doing that, along with cleaning up a few areas where we lost shots today, will serve us well for tomorrow's round."

Day two of stroke play at the Big South Championship will begin on Monday, April 19 as Longwood looks to continue their strong start on moving day.
