When Danae Klingspor was tasked with planning her son’s first birthday party, she was only sure of two things: it needed to be COVID-friendly and it would be Whataburger-themed.
In just his first year, her son, Gideon, had become an avid fan of the Texas fast-food chain. His typical order? French fries with a side of bread and cheese pulled from his mom’s No. 4 (hold the jalapeños). And with drive-by birthday parties becoming a popular and safe way to celebrate in the midst of the pandemic, creating a Whataburger drive-thru in the front yard (which could later double as a playhouse) just made sense.
At first the plan was to use cardboard boxes to build the infrastructure. But then it dawned on Klingspor: “I decided if I’m going to make a playhouse, I’m going to make a playhouse,” she says. Working as an Austin-based interior designer, it only took her one week to create the blueprint. Then, with the help of her husband, she spent the seven weeks leading up to Gideon’s January birthday constructing the 6 1/2-foot-tall structure.
Using plywood and polyvinyl chloride, the couple created the fast-food joint’s traditional A-frame look, along with the iconic orange-and-white roofing and a special to-go counter. To make transportation easy, they attached locking wheels along the base. On the day of the party, they wheeled the miniature Whataburger to their front yard and waited for their “customers” to drive by.
Gideon sat behind the counter. As friends and family pulled up, they were invited to “place their order,” which entailed handing the birthday boy his gift and receiving a goody bag—candy stuffed inside Whataburger fry cups—in return.
With Klingspor’s husband being a big fan of “all things Texan,” she says she could see them building more playhouses in the future. “I made a joke that for Gideon’s next birthday I need to do a Buc-ee’s gas station and just add it on,” she says. “We could have a whole Texas-themed backyard.”
This project, clearly, wasn’t just for her son. In some ways, it was Klingspor’s way of fulfilling a dream from when she was a kid. “I come from a single mom. She didn’t have a ton of time to make a playhouse for us, and I always wanted one,” she says. “So this was a way of giving my former childhood a playhouse, too.”
