STEUBENVILLE — The Buckeye Local softball team hit the ball all over the field against Catholic Central on Friday, en route to its first win of the season.
The Panthers pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of nine Crusader errors, as Buckeye Local recorded a 15-2 victory on the Steve Zamana Softball Field.
“We sure did hit the ball well,” Buckeye Local (1-10) head coach Drew Case said. “We have hit the ball in our last six or seven games, but we have not got any lucky breaks. We have played one heck of a schedule up to this point. We are thrilled to get our first win. Hopefully, we can build from that.”
The visitors scored multiple runs in every inning except the third when they did not score.
“We had no energy,” Catholic Central (6-3) head coach Rick Gillette said. “We were not ready to play. We made a couple of errors in the first. You can’t do that. They are a big school. We weren’t ready to go. We are going to have to bounce back next week. We have got to go back to work. We have to move forward.”
Kyla Kull picked up the win for Buckeye Local. She allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out seven without walking a batter in her four innings in the circle. Samantha Ankrom pitched the fifth. She retired Catholic Central in order by striking out two and getting a ground out to end the game.
“I was very pleased with our pitching,” Case said. “They scored 13 runs (Thursday). I fully expected this to be a tight ballgame. I know what they are capable of doing. We just want to get better. We want to keep this momentum going.”
Jayda Jones took the loss for the Crusaders. She struck out three and walked three, while allowing 14 runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of work inside the circle. Natlia Dunburg-Ingram came on to pitch with one out in the top of the fifth inning, and she pitched the rest of the way. She gave up one run on two hits and did not strike out or walk a batter.
Buckeye Local collected 11 hits — four of which went for extra bases.
Alexa Williams tallied a single, two doubles and an RBI. Josey Meddles delivered a single, a triple and three RBIs. Isabella Hepburn produced a single, a double and two RBIs. Rylie White recorded a pair of run-scoring singles. Ally Trekel and Kaydence Kinyo each added a run-scoring base knock.
Kaylee Kirkpatrick collected an RBI double for the Crusaders, Bella Zinno tallied a run-scoring single and Dunburg-Ingram singled.
The Panthers plated four runs in each of the first two innings before scoring three more in the fourth and four in the fifth.
The Crusaders tallied one run in the first and another in the third.
Catholic Central’s errors proved costly, as they led to plenty of Panther runs.
“That is what good teams do,” Case said. “That is something we didn’t do in our first couple of games. They gave us extra outs, and we we made them pay. We did a good job.
“We played solid defense. We got great pitching. We were ready to go. My kids battle. We were 0-10 coming into this game, but our record is not indicative of how good of a team we are. We are a better team than our record shows. Our schedule is not going to get any easier.”
