MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher women's hockey team will open the 2020-21 season at Ridder Arena the weekend of Nov. 21-22, hosting Ohio State in the first of four series for the Maroon & Gold in November and December 2020. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association unveiled the first half of its 2020-21 women's league schedule on Friday.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to start playing games," head coach Brad Frost said. "Our group has been patiently waiting to get the green light, and we are very excited. I want to thank all those who have worked tirelessly to allow this to happen. We can't wait to drop the puck!"

Minnesota alternates home and away series, hosting Ohio State (Nov. 21-22) and Wisconsin (Dec. 4-5) and traveling to Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 27-28) and Ohio State (Dec. 11-12) to round out its first four series of the 24th season of Gopher women's hockey.

WCHA schools will play eight league games from November 20 to December 19 before breaking for the holidays. League play will resume as early as Jan. 1. The post-holiday schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

"We look forward to dropping the puck on our season later this month," WCHA Women's League Commissioner Jennifer Flowers said. "One of our primary goals throughout our return to competition discussions has been to provide our student-athletes the opportunity to compete safely in a meaningful season. We are pleased to have determined a path that allows that to happen. We continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape and remain committed to playing as complete a schedule as possible."

For the start of the 2020-21 season, there will be no ticket sales for Gopher women's hockey home games as Minnesota Department of Health guidelines specify that venues must reduce occupant capacity to no more than 250 (indoor venue) patrons.

WCHA officials and member institution administrators are finalizing Return to Competition protocols that will be implemented upon approval. The protocols, along with state, local, and university safety guidelines, will be enforced at all WCHA arenas throughout the 2020-21 season.

"I want to commend our administrators, coaches and league staff for the work they've put in to building our Return to Competition plan," Flowers added. "We've engaged in several months of in-depth discussions as we worked through the challenges presented by the pandemic to craft a plan that addresses the health and safety of all."

Game times and broadcast information, as well as the remainder of the 2020-21 WCHA schedule and the format for the 2021 WCHA Final Faceoff, will be announced at a later date.
