Initially, Bell was caught off guard. The ball never falls in your lap like that. But once he corralled the interception, he knew exactly what to do. The former high school quarterback took off toward the end zone and ran it back 10 yards for a touchdown.
When Bell crossed the goal line, he ran to the back corner and pointed both hands toward the crowd. It just so happened his mom and three brothers – who drove up from Kissimmee, Florida – were all sitting in that corner of the Georgia Dome. It was the perfect spot. For the brothers, it was their first time seeing Bell play in college. Now they were watching him score his first touchdown directly in front of them.
“Right when I ran into the end zone, I could see my family,” Bell said. “It was just a surreal moment to score a touchdown and have them be right there in the corner to witness it.”
To commemorate the moment, Bell tried to keep the ball. He got all the way back to the Auburn sideline before the officials came over and took the ball back. He never saw it again.
It was at about that same time, though, when Bell realized the magnitude of his touchdown, the stage it was on and what it meant for the season – the Tigers were going to win the SEC championship and go play for a national championship.
