The new report from hands-on impressions of the Xbox Series X reveals that the console reduces load times for older games by a significant amount, especially when compared to 2018's Xbox One X. The faster loading times of the next-gen console have been one of the key features that Microsoft has used in promotional material, suggesting that a lot of effort has been put into reducing the time players spend waiting around.
The news about faster load times come hot on the heels of other revelations about backwards compatible games on the Xbox Series X. A number of previews over the last few days have shown that the new system is able to double the performance of many older games compared to current-gen setups. Most notably, the framerate of these titles can increase from 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second, with the resolution also boosted.
With the console's backward compatibility feature embargo having lifted, an in-depth report by Ars Technica investigating the load times of backwards compatible games on the Xbox Series X has revealed that loads times are much quicker on the next-gen hardware. Journalist Sam Machkovech tested a variety of older games from the Xbox 360 and Xbox One to test whether loading is boosted by the console's better architecture. The results showed a drop of up to 73% in load times, meaning that players can jump into the action in less than half the time it would usually take to do so on the Xbox One X. However, some of the titles tested, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 only saw load times reduce by around half. The good news, though, is that none of these games had a patch released to optimize them for Xbox Series X, which could also improve load times further.
While the early previews of the Xbox Series X have been mostly positive, there are some concerns for gamers. Chief among them is the fact that the OS for thenew console appears to take up almost 200 GB of internal memory. Considering the lack of storage in the Xbox Series S and the expected large sizes of next-gen games, this might leave players short and only able to install a very limited number of titles on the internal SSD.
The ability of the Xbox Series X/S to play older games from the Xbox family of consoles has been a big selling point for Microsoft, especially with Sony's confusing messaging over backwards compatibility with the PS5. the fact that these games will not only work with the new console but get s significant upgrade in terms of performance and load time will also delight those who are looking to purchase the next-gen system but want to keep access to their older games. It should also boost the value of Xbox Game Pass by making playing some of the titles in the service's catalog even more enticing.
The Xbox Series X/S will be available on November 10, 2020, and pre-orders are open now.
