Winter leagues are slowly coming back online but bowlers continue to look sharp as Eric Patten and Andy Toth opened the season with their first career perfect games.
You would expect Brent Tishuk’s name to be first on the board in the Friday Trios league at Blue Valley with 300. Instead, Patten strung twelve straight in the third of four games.
“I found a spot and after the sixth or seventh one I thought I could get this,” said the 22-year-old from Easton. “I was telling myself to just keep doing what I was doing.”
Patten was coming off games of 199 and 201 before running the table. He said he was throwing one of his dad’s old castaway balls that he had drilled for the season. Turns out Jim left a little magic in the ball for his son to capture.
“I got the first strike in the 10th and I was nervous. The next ball I pulled it just enough and carried the 10-pin. The last ball I was calm and felt really good,” he said.
As Patten was attempting perfection, a crowd had gathered to witness the occasion. He bowls with his dad and younger brother, Dylan. But also in attendance were mom, Ellen, and sister Kayla.
“He pulled the one in the 10th and I thought he was going to go through the headpin,” said Jim Patten. “I made a screeching sound.”
“I didn’t want to look up,” continued Eric. “I didn’t want to see the eyes on me. It was really cool having everybody there and to get over that hurdle.”
The 300 erases a previous high of something in the 270s and he next looks to top the 800 mark while improving on a 211 average from last season.
Like many others, Toth hadn’t picked up a ball since March and even took the opportunity to take a couple of shots during league practice. Two times up and 20 pins down the 39-year-old said enough is enough.
Opening with 207 in the Holy Family A League, Toth strung a couple of strikes before opening in the 10th. From there it was full steam ahead.
“I was feeling pretty good and stayed where I was at,” said the Wind Gap resident. “When I got the first seven, I told the guys to do me favor: if I get to the end make noise.”
His last bid for 300 ended in disappointment when Toth said it got too quiet and his ball crossed over, netting him seven sticks for 297.
His comrades obliged this time.
“I struck in the 10th and everybody was carrying on,” he said. “I was just hoping to keep it on the right side. That was the big one for me because after that I was OK.”
Toth drilled the 11th with ease setting up a chance at redemption.
“I didn’t want to think too seriously about it. It looked pretty good when I let it go and it carried. I didn’t think I’d ever get one,” he said.
Following the 300 were a few adult beverages and before Toth knew it, the night was over with 162 for a 669. Despite the rough ending, the night was one he’ll remember forever.
Next up for Toth is a crack at topping his dad Joe Toth’s career-best 768. He averaged 194 last year.
Laubach on fire
Before the Junior bowling season is underway, two bowlers have found success in tournament play.
Parker Laubach was a week removed from earning a spot in the PBA Junior Championships when he headed west toward Harrisburg at ABC East Lanes for a stop on the PBJT Major #2 Singles event.
Laubach qualified for the three-man finals, where he needed overtime to secure the top prize of $300 in scholarship money. Laubach was tied at 213 before converting a spare and uncharacteristically whiffing at a 4-pin in the two-frame rolloff. But his opponent failed to capitalize and handed Laubach the crown.
Leyna Kratzer ventured to Woodbridge Bowling Center in Woodbridge, N.J., in search of gold.
On the line for Kratzer was a ticket to Indianapolis next July for the finals of the Junior Gold tournament. She earned a spot by winning the Girls U15 division with a nail-biting five-pin victory. Her 165-153-213-171--702 assured her path to Indy is paved in gold.
