MIDWEST CITY — Qwontrel Walker fell to the black and yellow turf seemingly exhausted.
Stillwater’s senior running back had just rushed for his 35th carry of the game, this one going for his third touchdown. He juked a defender in the backfield before cutting up field and dragging another into the end zone, where he had a minor cramp, a microcosm of his body of work Friday.
Class 6A-II No. 2 Stillwater was strong in all phases during its 31-10 win against No. 3 Midwest City at Jim Darnell Stadium. Walker rushed 43 times for 284 yards and four scores. His second carry of the second half, a 13-yard run on a sweep to the right, made him the 10th player in state history to surpass 7,000 career rushing yards and the first in Class 6A.
“It means a whole lot to me,” Walker said. “It’s way more than what I thought I’d get. All I can really thank is my O-line, all my O-linemen.”
Walker scored again on a 46-yard run up the left side late in the fourth quarter to get him even closer to moving up the all-time rushing yardage list.
He’s only 61 yards behind Kingfisher’s Landon Nault for ninth and 62 behind John Marshall’s Devonta Lee for eighth. If Walker can continue averaging about 250 yards per game, and Stillwater (6-0, 4-0 District 6A-II-1) doesn’t have any more cancellations, he could become the fourth player to reach 8,000 career rushing yards.
“He was complaining about his leg before the game,” Stillwater coach Tucker Barnard said. “I don’t know if we’ve ever had him carry that many times before.”
Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Walker scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards to give the Pioneers a two-score advantage before Midwest City kicked s field goal to make it 14-3 at halftime.
