HURON — The Heartland Region saw five counties report new positive cases in Monday’s COVID-19 numbers from the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH), but the overall active case load for the region actually decreased due to a high number of recovered cases announced.
Beadle County’s numbers were static in Monday’s report, with one new positive case and one new recovered case. That allowed the county to remain at 18 active cases.
That was the case for Clark and Jerauld counties as well. Both added one new positive case, but also added a new recovered case. Clark held steady at five active cases, while Jerauld was stable at four active cases.
Kingsbury County was the only local county to add a new positive case without adding a new recovered case, seeing its active case load rise to four. However, on the flip side, Hand County added one new recovered case without adding a positive case, so the county’s active cases is now down to just one.
Spink County did continue its recent surge, now reaching 70 total positive cases with three new positive cases announced by the DOH Monday. The county also reported four new recovered cases, allowing the active cases in the county to drop by one to 26.
Overall, the Heartland Region added seven new positive cases but saw the overall active case load fall by one to 60.
The scene was similar statewide, as the typical low testing that the state is used to on Sunday was likely exasperated by a holiday weekend, leading to the first time since August 25 that fewer than 1,000 tests were reported to the state in a single day.
The state still added 191 new positive cases, but the largest amount of recovered cases in a single day, 317, allowed for the state’s active COVID-19 cases to fall below 3,000 to 2,892 after spending four days above the 3,000 mark.
The DOH will hold its twice-weekly press briefing and release school infection numbers for K-12 schools and state colleges, universities, and trade schools today.
