In 2019, Texas Tech running backs accounted for 300 carries and 1,478 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns. They also caught 74 passes for 359 yards. Of the top 3 running backs from Matt Wells inaugural season as Head Coach, only Sarodorick Thompson remains. Armand Shyne exhausted his eligibility and Ta'Zhawn Henry decided to take his talents elsewhere and entered the transfer portal.
Thompson had twice the carries, yards and touchdowns as the other two running backs. Can Sarodorick Thompson increase his load and be Tech's feature back and become Tech's first thousand yard rusher since DeAndre Washington did it in 2014 and 2015. Washington had 188 carries and 1103 yards in 2014 and 233 carries and 1,492 yards in 2015.
Thompson was the only running back of the top three in 2019 to play in all 12 games. He was Tech's leading rusher at running back in every Big 12 game except the TCU and West Virginia games. Thompson's biggest game came against Baylor were he carried the ball 28 times for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Head Coach Matt Wells and Offensive Coordinator David Yost have stated multiple times that they want a balanced attack. In 2019, the Tech offense was 43% running plays and 57% passing plays. In 2018 at Utah State, Yost's offense was more balanced with 53% running plays and 47% passing plays. With Tech's change in 2020 of going to a more drop back QB, more pressure will be placed on the running backs to help protect the QB's on passing plays while carrying the ball more on running plays.
Can Sarodorick Thompson be the feature back and carry the ball 20 to 30 times a game while helping to protect the QB? Can he have the ability to stay healthy and resilient throughout the season with such a heavy workload and become a thousand yard rusher on the season?
