OGDEN, Utah – Battling on the road in the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team put up a tough fight against Weber State but ultimately fell 3-1. The Roadrunners were led by middle blocker Brooke Boiseau, who tallied a season-high 20 kills on .533 hitting in her final match for CSUB.
"This one was hard to swallow because we had opportunities but didn't take advantage of them," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "I am however extremely proud of this team and all we have accomplished this season. I am looking forward to next year already!"
Melo also spoke about the standout performance of Boiseau and her senior leaders: "Brooke finishing her career this way makes me very happy for her. She deserves it. She bleeds Blue and Gold and has put her heart on the line for this program. I am very thankful to her and all the other seniors who are not returning. They have made this program better."
Along with her 20 kills, Boiseau also notched one block on Friday. That lone block helped Boiseau finish with 297 career block assists, just one shy of CSUB's Division I career record (298, Molly O'Hagan).
Bakersfield also received a milestone performance from setter Seleisa Elisaia. The junior tallied 43 assists, finishing the season with 2,012 career assists. With the effort, Elisaia became just the fifth `Runner in CSUB's Division I history to reach the 2,000 assist milestone.
The `Runners and Wildcats played a tight opening set until a 6-2 run gave Weber State a 22-18 advantage. The host team finished off the win, 25-18, despite five kills from Boiseau and defensive specialist Anna Unke's five digs.
From a 10-10 tie in Set 2, Weber State used a 9-3 run to gain some breathing room. The `Runners fended off four set-point opportunities, but Bakersfield eventually fell behind 2-0 on the match after a 25-22 win from the Wildcats.
Bakersfield held slim leads at 16-13 and 22-19 in the third set. The `Runners held on to win 25-21 and extend the match to the fourth set. In the final game, CSUB led at 18-16, but a 4-0 run by the Wildcats put Weber State ahead by two. The host team eventually sealed its victory, 25-21.
CSUB (18-11, .621) wrapped up the season with the best win percentage in Melo's eight seasons with the `Runners. Most of the Bakersfield squad will shift focus to the beach volleyball season, set to begin in February.
