PHOENIX — Of all the basketball-related things NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had to say before Game 1 of the Finals on Tuesday, there was only one that made reporters in the room wonder if their ears had deceived them.
When asked about load management, that controversial and popular practice in which so many of today’s marquee players routinely take nights off and follow the sport science for the sake of preserving their body, Silver gave the sort of brutally honest answer that belied the inherent politics of his position. The late David Stern would have been so proud of his mentee.
“Resting is up over 100 percent this season from last season,” Silver, whose league was struck by a rash of star player injuries that played such a pivotal part of this postseason, said when asked about the load-management outlook.
