Bakers Earns First Team All-State Honors - RIchmond Spiders Athletic

RICHMOND, Va. -- Spider men's golfer Lou Baker was named First Team All-State by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced Thursday. Baker, a rising junior, is the first Spider men's golfer to earn All-State honors from VaSID since Matthew Lowe in 2016.

Baker competed in 13 rounds over five stroke-play events for the Spiders this spring. He posted a team-leading 72.54 stroke average, the lowest for any Spider in a season since 2017 (Keegan Hoff). In four full-field events, Baker never finished lower than 13th. His best performance of the season came at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. in March. Baker shot 69/70/72/211 (+1) to finish second in the field of 88, the best individual result for any Spider since the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, when Zack Justice and Andrew Sciarretta tied for second. 

VaSID All-State is only the latest accolade for Baker. In May, he was named Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year and in June he was named to the conference's All-Academic Team. Baker is the only player in program history to earn a conference player of the year award and conference all-academic honors. 

Baker joins Matthew Lowe (2016), David Germann (2013), Daniel Walker (2013), and Jordan Utley (2007-08) as the only Spiders to be named to the VaSID All-State team. Baker's next competition will be a U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana, Md. on July 6-7. He will also compete in the Maryland Open at Baltimore Country Club, his home course, on July 12-14.
