Vehicles plying on Gurugram roads carry 4 times more load than permissible limit - Times of India

GURUGRAM: Vehicles carrying three times more freight than permissible load is damaging the city’s arterial roads, revealed a survey carried out by the School of Planning and Architecture.

The survey commissioned by Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) found that major roads such as Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) Dwarka Expressway, Sohna Road, Pataudi Road and others have suffered severe damage due to overloading of vehicles.
The heavy weight of the vehicles is causing the earth to cave in at many points on these routes. “The survey, which was carried out by installing meters at various points on these roads, found that trucks and dumpers were carrying 2,000 tonne of goods as opposed to the permissible load of 500 tonne,” said a senior GMDA official, adding that this was not only causing cave ins but also potholes.
The survey that was first started on SRP that sees heavy traffic movement also found that the stretch between Kherki Dhaula and Ghata was the most damaged due to the movement of trucks and stone crushers.
TOI had also reported that the reason for damage on SPR was heavy traffic. GMDA officials added that while the load is almost four times of the permissible limit, the impact of the load is 16 times more. SPR can withstand a load of around 8 tonne but currently it is witnessing around 34 tonne on a daily basis.
The metropolitan authority is now planning to write to the road transport authority (RTA) and the traffic police to stop these vehicles from plying. While the RTA and the traffic police have carried out several drives in the past to check such vehicles, the practice hasn’t stopped yet.
The survey results come at a time when most roads in the city are in a bad condition and need immediate repair. However, officials believe that no amount of repair and patch work will suffice if heavy vehicles continue to ply.
“The roads can withstand a specified load and if the vehicles are heavier, roads will continue to get damaged no matter how many times they are repaired,” the GMDA official added.
Earlier, RTA could fine a vehicle anywhere between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 per tonne but the amended Motor Vehicle Act states that overloading will attract a penalty of up to Rs 20,000 per extra tonne.
According to the data of overloading challans, RTA Gurugram has issued the highest number of challans in the state. In 2017-18, the department had issued 2,477 challans amounting to Rs 8.45 crore but even then the practice hasn’t stopped.
